Toyota Safety Sense includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Warning, Automatic Braking, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert With Steering Assist, Front and Rear Parking Assist, and Automatic High Beam. RELATED: 10 Most Reliable Hybrid SUVs On The Used Market With this level of fuel-sipping, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid can theoretically travel for almost 450 miles on a single top-up of its 10.6-gallon fuel tank (the gasoline Corolla Cross has 13.2 gallons). However, the hybrid Corolla Cross averages 45 MPG in the city and 38 MPG during highway drives, returning a 42-MPG combined fuel economy rating. The gasoline Corolla Cross trims are already impressive, as they can reach 30 to 32 miles per gallon (MPG) on combined city and highway driving. The additional power and handling is even more impressive when we consider the fact that the Corolla Cross Hybrid also has an amazing fuel economy rating. Together, this transmission and drive configuration help make the Corolla Cross Hybrid more responsive to the driver compared to the ICE Corolla Cross which uses a more traditional CVT and AWD combination. The Nightshade Edition isn’t available for that car, but the widebody GR Corolla is plenty aggressive on its own.Power delivery is more instantaneous with the Corolla Cross Hybrid due to the near-instantaneous torque that the electric motors provide through the electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) and electronic on-demand all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. The car also finally got the GR treatment in 2023, giving it the performance to match its sporty styling. Toyota gave the Corolla a modest refresh for 2023, bringing new LED headlights and an updated front fascia, bumper and grille. All models get a continuously variable transmission with a unique “first gear” that enables more confident acceleration. The gas-only Corolla carries on with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 169 horsepower. The Corolla Hybrid Nightshade can be had with front- or all-wheel drive and comes with a 1.8-liter engine with two electric motors. Though the package gives the Corolla a far sportier look, nothing changes under the hood. An available options package adds a sunroof. The Corolla sedan and hybrid models are available in black, silver and white, while the Corolla Hatchback’s two-tone paint options include white with a black roof, silver with a black roof, or solid black. Sedan models get a rear spoiler, and the Corolla hatch picks up a two-tone paint job and a surprisingly aggressive rear wing spoiler. All badges have been blacked out, and the cars get a gloss-black mesh grille. We don’t have pricing yet, but the Corolla Nightshade models are expected on dealers’ lots later this year.Īs with other Nightshade models, the Corolla gets a host of not-quite-sinister-looking black exterior trim pieces and exclusive 18-inch bronze wheels. Though they look the part, Corolla Nightshade Edition models are mechanically no fiercer than the standard models, though it’s hard to argue with the fuel economy of up to 47 mpg for the hybrid variant. The automaker is bringing back the Nightshade Edition for 2024, and the hybrid variant is available with the treatment for the new model year. There’s good news for hardcore Toyota Corolla fans.
